Walkingscapes

Walkingscapes is a series of large scale photographic works on mulberry paper, composed from images taken during long walks through forests and varied landscapes. Each piece begins with the act of walking, an embodied practice of attention and connection. Moving through these environments, I seek to engage with and capture an intangible spirit found within the landscape, a quiet presence that exists beyond what is immediately visible.

Back in the studio, the photographs evolve through a process of cyanotype printing, hand toned with organic materials such as wine tannins, blackberries, acorns, and other natural pigments gathered along the way. This alchemical process imbues the images with the memory of place; each print bearing traces of the environment that inspired it. The resulting works function as both document and offering, a memorialization of the natural world as it faces rapid transformation under human impact.

Ranging in scale from intimate 8.5”x11” prints to immersive installations extending over nine feet, Walkingscapes invites viewers to step into the work, to encounter the forest not as an image, but as an experience. The large scale recontextualizes the landscape within the gallery space, translating the ephemeral sensations of light, air, and movement into a visual field the body can inhabit.

The project is informed by the concept of forest bathing; the belief in the restorative and healing powers of the forest. In many cultures, time spent among trees is understood to quiet the mind and repair the spirit. Access to these environments, however, can be limited. Through this work, I seek to extend that experience by creating a space where viewers might momentarily breathe in the calm, mystery, and vitality of the natural world.
